Rath Yatra or Rath Yatra festival of Puri, Orrisa is one of the most Famous Indian festivals. This year Happy Rath Yatra Festival is on Friday, 1 July 2022. The Road in front of the temple, across which the giant chariots roll, is popularly known as Bada Danda or the Grand Road. Lord Jagannath is known as the lord if the Universe. Rath Yatra image.

People used to celebrate this famous Happy Rathyatra festival in various parts of the country and used to pull chariots with the idols of Lord Jagannath and his elder brother Balabhadra and sister Subhadra as per the custom rituals of Lord Jagannath rathayatra every year.

 

Puri Jagannath Temple | Lord Jagannath Temple

The temple complex, which is mainly famous as the Jagannath temple and is the home of renowned deity Lord Jagannath and his elder brother Balabhadra and sister Subhadra, was surrounded by a high wall.

Inside the area of the temple, there is a range of various other shrines. There are four gates of the temple – the Lion Gate (east), the Tiger Gate (west), Elephant Gate (north), and the Horse Gate (south). The main entrance of the Jagannath temple is thru the Lion gate, before which stands the gigantic column, the Arun Stambha.

The Idols details of the origin of the cult of Lord Jagannath and also about the distinctive physical look are mentioned in various Hindu religious books.

The Chariots of Puri Rath Yatra Festival

Lord Jagannath sits on the tallest chariot, a 45-feet tall chariot, and its name is ‘Nandighosa,’ runs on 16 wheels and is dressed in a red and yellow artifact. In 44 feet second chariot, which has four wheels, Lord Balabhadra is placed and it’s name is ‘Taladhwaja,’ dressed in a red and green artifact. Finally, Goddess Subhadra sits on the third chariot, which is 43 feet tall with 12 wheels named ‘Darpadalan.’

All the chariots used to build fresh every year and used to be fully decorated, representing the traditional art of Orissa like the art of wood and Pipili carvings.

Significance of Puri Rath Yatra Festival

This famous Indian festival RathaYatra used to take place in the month of June-July every year. As per the ritual, the deities brought of the temple and placed in the respective chariots and traveled up to the Gundicha Temple on the opposite side, and the Gods stay there till return.

Though the festival continues for almost nine to ten days, the first day is considered as the holiest Day and on this day, as per the belief, seeing Lord Jagannath on Chariot is a virtue of life. Earlier, people used to throw themselves under the wheel of the chariots for self-sacrifice with the belief that after death, they will transfer straight to heaven or Baikuntha. But this practice has been banned by the British rulers.

Preparations for the Rath Yatra festival

Snan Yatra

Preparations for the Ratha Yatra festival of Puri, begin two weeks ahead in conjunction with carrying the ‘snan yatra’ and conjointly even the showering ritual. The deities are given a bath, and they fall sick and enter seclusion. During this period, the temple remains closed to devotees.

On the Day of the Happy Rathayatra festival, rituals are performed before the chariots begin to roll. The devotees unite the protection workers in drawing on the chariots that seem to be a large ship through the ocean of people. The Chariots can have to be compelled to get there within the Gundicha Temple until sunset. Then, they’re abandoned on the Road, if for any reason, the chariots cannot end the journey in time and complete the journey same day.

Pahandi – Rath Yatra festival

Pahandi‘ is known as the ritual of carrying the idols, decorated with floral ornaments, from the temple to the chariots by the devotees. One group of devotees tries to pull the idols from the front where the other group of devotees push the idols from the backside, while carrying the idols to the chariots. This procession is accompanied by group of musicians and the crowd used to greet with chants of Jai Jagannath. Pahandi is not an easy task to place the heavy wooden idols in the chariots and it can take hours.

Chhenra Panhara – Ratha Yatra festival ritual

The ritual chhenra panhara is followed by Pahandi. Chhenra panhara ritual symbolizes that in the eyes of God, everyone is the same. During this ritual, the King of the former royal family of Puri used to perform out this ritual by sweeping the chariots with a golden brush. Then, the devotees used to sprinkle flower petals and water, and the King clear them with the golden brush.

Bahuda Yatra | Ulta Rath

On the Day of here Panchami, it’s believed that Lord Jagannath’s consort god Hindu deity awakens to the chariot and divides an area from anger as a result of Jagannath disbursement slow along with his sisters and aunt as opposition attending her. Sunabesha – Ratha Yatra festival

Ratna Simhasan – Ratha Yatra festival
